October News | 3rd Annual Ensenada Leadership Breakfast + more…

18 Nov

For the third time we had the privilege of celebrating another year of gathering together with leaders from all spheres of influence in our community.  For this third anniversary breakfast we had in attendance a congressman and others from local government offices; directors of various non-profit organizations, schools, and businesses, as well as representatives of various churches and ministry organizations.  We were privileged to have as our speaker, James Lee, a bi-vocational, Korean born man, who is a Regional Vice President for the East West bank, as well as an associate Pastor in his church.  His thoughts were inspirational and encouraging as he challenged those in attendance to follow the wisdom of God and invest in education, citing that Mexico has the potential to be one of the greatest countries in the coming years.

Also during this month we were blessed to be able to facilitate a weekend retreat for our ministry partners Danny and Lucy in conjunction with Restor Ministries.  It was the first International retreat that Restor has sponsored, and it was such a gift that it could be done here in our city.  God used this time that Danny and Lucy invested in their relationship with God and with each other to do a transforming work in their lives and marriage.  Thank you God and thank you Restor!!

Also this month there was an important meeting between the leaders of our Home Church and leaders from Terra Nova church to pray and share ideas about continuing our partnership in service to the community of Ensenada.  It was very exciting to consider some new avenues for ministry together.

Thank YOU for your part in all God is doing!!

Giving made easier… Use Online Banking to Automatically send a Monthly Support Check

13 Nov

One of the greatest joys of the work God has called us to, Building Relationships in Ensenada that Serve the Church and Transform the Community, is that so many people, both near and far, can be involved.   We are eternally grateful for all of our friends and partners who through their support have given us the privilege to bring the person and the message of Jesus Christ to this city and these people that we love.

To make it easier for our friends and partners to financially support us and the work we do here, we are introducing a new solution that utilizes the banks’ Online Banking & Bill Pay systems to send us a check.  What this means is that when you set us up as a Bill Pay recipient  your bank will then print and mail a check to us, and from most personal checking accounts this will be a FREE service.  This could be a one-time gift, or it could be a monthly check mailed automatically for you, for example:  $50 sent on the 1st day of each month.

Setting-up an automatic monthly gift means you don’t have to remember to write out a check and mail it to us each month (saving you time & postage), while ensuring that we receive the regular financial support you desire to invest in the ministry here in Ensenada.  Furthermore, you will still receive a monthly receipt and personal update from us as well as a year end record of your giving.

To find out how to Give Automatically, see:

Again, thank you for your support that enables us to keep fulfilling our God-given mission of Building Relationships in Ensenada that Serve the Church and Transform the Community.

Turning Pain into Peace

17 May

Marcelina with David, and Scott Simons and Cheri Steele from Terra Nova Church

I’ve never known the pain of losing a child, but through my counseling work I have met many people who have faced this life-altering experience. Recently one of my former patients lost her son as the result of a chronic ear infection that was never treated properly and resulted in an abcess in his brain. (The lack of resources and adequate health care here in Mexico could be the topic of another post sometime!)

On Mother’s Day weekend, this grieving mom accepted my invitation to join us and members of Terra Nova Church as we returned to Casa de Esperanza, a refuge for abused and abandoned mothers and their children. By being willing to move beyond her own pain, Marcelina experienced joy and peace that had been eluding her in the two months since her son’s death.

We thank Terra Nova for sharing their Mother’s Day with women in Mexico who really need to know that they are loved and valued and at the same time provide an environment where a mother’s pain could be replaced with peace.

Fifty Seven Words that Changed our Lives

17 Nov

Through some friends who did their Masters at Regent College in Vancouver, BC, Canada, we were introduced to the teachings of Darrell W. Johnson.   His name was not unfamiliar to us as he was the Pastor of a special friend who is now “Dancing in Heaven”–Don Valencia.

Darrell W Johnson Fifty-Seven Words that Change the World: A Journey through the Lord's PrayerThrough listening to some of Darrell’s teachings we discovered that one of his books covered in depth some teachings from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7); specifically those dealing with the Lord’s Prayer.   The intriguing title is “Fifty Seven Words that Change the World.” After reading the book in English we thought it would be perfect for our Thursday night study group made up of Catholic friends who have been studying the Bible with us for the past 15 years.  We were all very enthusiastic and scheduled to begin.    Each week that we met however meant that David and I had to spend hours translating each chapter into Spanish.  Sometimes we were putting the finishing touches on it minutes before we ran out the door to share it with the group.

The effort was worth it though as the Lord’s Prayer moved from being just a prayer that Jesus prayed, or the words used to close a religious service in a church; to something dynamic, powerful, real, personal and above all life-changing.  For all of us who went through the book we have said we will never hear or say the Prayer the same again.  Thank you, Jesus.  And thank you, Darrell.
